Specialist Career or Leadership Career?

Focus area Career Development
Published 23.07.26

"I’ve been asked to take over a team – but I’m not sure I actually want to lead. What if I’d rather stay in my expert role?"

Moving into a leadership role is often seen as the logical next step: strong technical performance, therefore ready to take on leadership responsibilities. But this assumption falls short. Leadership is a discipline in its own right, not the automatic reward for professional excellence. It calls for different skills, different priorities and a different understanding of impact.

Two Paths, One Goal

The specialist track and the leadership track are equally valuable career paths, not a hierarchy. Specialists who build deep expertise and drive complex topics forward take on just as much responsibility as leaders do – only differently: through expertise, quality and professional direction.

How to Tell What’s Right for You

Ask yourself honestly: Are you motivated by developing people, providing direction and sharing responsibility for their performance? Or does your energy come more from deepening technical questions yourself and driving solutions forward? Both are valuable – what matters is which form of responsibility feels right for you.

Project Leadership as a Stepping Stone

If you’re unsure, you don’t need to decide right away. Project leadership offers a way to take on responsibility for outcomes, coordination and teams on a temporary basis – often without formal line-management authority. This allows you to test your own inclination before committing long-term.

Pressure from Outside

Often, the expectation to take on leadership comes from outside – from managers, from your environment, or from your own idea of what success looks like. That expectation deserves to be questioned: is leadership really the next right step, or simply the most visible one? A specialist career is not a compromise; it is a deliberate decision in favour of your own strengths.

The Decision as an Ongoing Process

The choice between a specialist and a leadership career does not have to be final. Roles, life phases and preferences continue to evolve. More important than making the perfect decision is the willingness to review your choice regularly and to realign it when needed.

PIVARO Takeaway

A leadership career is not the automatic continuation of professional excellence. Those who honestly examine their own motivation – for people, development and collaboration, or for subject matter, expertise and quality – find the path that truly fits. A specialist career and a leadership career are two equally valid answers to the same question.
